It’s been, I think we can all agree, a funny old year. Here we are on Friday the 13th, 2020, and on a global scale we’re all collectively wondering if it could actually get worse. It therefore gives me enormous pleasure to introduce something that means a lot to us, given the times we are in: Toastie Construction Manual

This is Barny’s cook book. He’s always been the more culinarily inclined one of us, and while I love a good toastie, there is nothing that quite compares to the deep, spiritual connection that Barny feels to melted cheese. I have never met anyone else able to return home after a weekend of selling toasties and round it off with a late night grilled cheese session.

He’s wanted to write it ever since before I published Street Food Soliloquy five (!!) years ago. Once upon a time we sat side by side, tapping away at computers, writing our little hearts out. But years passed, children happened and actually selling toasties got in the way of writing about them.

And then 2020 happened. In one fell swoop our festival season, which looked really promising and fun back in March, was gone. Poof.

Creating the Recipe Book

We’ve not been idle though. We have two small children, who continue to take up most of our time – a conscious choice – and around the edges of that Barny has been creating the Toastie Construction Manual.

Toasties are not especially hard to make, but to make them well is only easy when you know how. By our calculations Barny has now sold something in the region of 100,000 toasties, and can be considered an expert. With this expertise in mind he has written up all the recipes of our favourite and best-selling toasties, and then illustrated them with, in my opinion, super cool exploded diagrams.

The best way to make a sandwich is in the correct order, and best way to see the correct order is with an exploded diagram. We can’t sell you toasties this year, so instead we bring you a book that allows you to recreate toasties in your kitchen.

I hope you like it. I hope you know someone else who likes it, and I hope that 2021 brings us back to the fields and towns we love visiting so that we can once more bring you ooey gooey melted magnificence.
